Student Journalism During Unprecedented Times
April 29, 2024; 5:00pm-7:00pm
Room 208, The ARCH (3601 Locust Walk)

As Penn was catapulted into the national spotlight last semester, the student journalists at The Daily Pennsylvanian broke some of the biggest stories in higher education while also localizing issues. The DP—a 140 year old independent student-run newspaper—holds campus institutions accountable and keeps the Penn community informed. What does student journalism look like at Penn as the University grapples with its relationship with free speech? How do DP staffers cover relevant issues that also impact their lives as students?

Come hear from the leaders who oversee a team of hundreds of students working for The Daily Pennsylvanian.

  • Molly Cohen is the President of the 140th Board of The Daily Pennsylvanian, where she oversees the long-term strategic and business vision of the publication.
  • Anna Vazhaeparambil is the Executive Editor of the 140th Board of The Daily Pennsylvanian, where she oversees editorial operations of our three publications: The DP, 34th Street, and Under the Button.
  • Jared Mitovich is the Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Pennsylvanian, where he oversees the DP’s daily digital and print content strategy for news, sports, and opinion reporting.
  • Moderated by Dick Polman, Maury Povich Writer-in-Residence.

Panel discussion to be followed by refreshments and informal conversation.

Please note that this event is for the on-campus University community. A PennCard will be required to enter.

Open expression is a hard promise: it is both a firm commitment and an extraordinarily difficult one.

The Penn community has experienced pain, fear, and anger over the past few months, but we must believe in the ability to engage across differences. We reject hate and violence unequivocally, and we embrace the spirit of free exchange without reservation. Penn Arts & Sciences launched the Living the Hard Promise initiative to create spaces in which the University community can begin the process of working through these tremendous challenges.
